Irrfan Khan died at 53 today. ‘Piku’ director Shoojit Sircar posted the news of his demise on Twitter.

Irfan was admitted to ICU after a colon infection on April 28. In 2018, the star was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer and was taking therapy in London. Irrfan is survived by wife Sutapa Sikdar and his two children, Babil and Ayan.

With his demise, the world cinema, Bollywood, and millions of film lovers have lost one of the most versatile and talented actors of the current time. He was a rare talent and a brilliant actor, his diverse roles and remarkable performances will remain etched in our memories.

Irfan’s Incredible Cinema Journey

Irfan Khan was known predominantly for his work in Hindi cinema, in addition to British and American films. He has been quoted in the media as among Indian cinema’s finest actors, his cinema journey spanned more than 30 years, earning numerous recognitions including a National Film Award, an Asian Film Award, and four Filmfare Awards. He received the Padma Shri in 2011 which India’s fourth highest civilian honor.

Irfan started his film career with a small role in Salaam Bombay! (1988), which was followed by years of struggle which ended after getting a role in the British film The Warrior (2001), he had his first success in Hindi cinema with the roles in the movie Haasil (2003) and Maqbool (2004). He went on to gain critical acclaim for his roles in The Namesake (2006). Movies like Life in a… Metro (2007) and Paan Singh Tomar (2011) are still among his best movies. He won the National Film Award for Best Actor for portraying the title character in Paan Singh Tomar as well.

Irfan Khan the Versatile Actor

Movies like the Lunchbox (2013), Piku (2015), and Talvar (2015) shows is versatile acting. He had supporting roles in some of the Hollywood films The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Life of Pi (2012), Jurassic World (2015), and Inferno (2016) which were commercially successful films worldwide.

Irfan’s other notable roles were in Slumdog Millionaire (2008), New York (2009), Haider (2014), and Gunday (2014), and the television series In Treatment (2010). His highest-grossing Hindi film release came with the comedy-drama Hindi Medium (2017), which won him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

Khan’s most recent Hindi film was Angrezi Medium, released this year on March 13. But, he hasn’t promoted this film because of his ill health.

Social Media flooded with condolence

“I trust, I have surrendered”; are among the several words Irrfan shared in a heartfelt letter he wrote in 2018 opening up about his battle with cancer. The film fraternity, his friends & known personalities flooded twitter with condolence messages.
